SDD18: Dealing With Difficult Classroom Situations

Hours: 1.3

Have you ever found yourself under stress in your classroom as a result of a disruptive student? During this workshop, we will discuss classroom strategies for dealing with difficult students and related situations. Additional topics we will examine: Responding to a classroom crisis; minimizing inappropriate behavior; when is it appropriate to refer the student to counseling; contacting ACC police.

College professors are progressively finding themselves “dealing with difficult classroom situations” more than ever before. There are many beliefs as to why such of behavior is on the increase in higher educational settings. During this session, professors and college staff members will receive an overview on strategies for classroom management with an aim of increasing student productivity.

Mervin James Jones is assistant dean at ACC’s Eastview Campus. He has served the college since 2008. He previously served as Counselor and Assistant Professor at both the Riverside and Round Rock Campuses. While on active duty, among other duties, Mervin was responsible for the welfare, training, mentoring, and counseling of soldiers. Mervin currently serves as a volunteer at the Round Rock Opportunity Center, one of the city’s alternative public schools. Mervin’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Columbia University and a Master’s of Arts degree in Clinical Counseling from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
