SDD18: The Hidden Strengths of Autism

Hours: 1.3

Encouraging student persistence and completion comes from understanding how students think and engage with classroom material, along with recognizing student barriers to success. But what happens when students think and engage differently and present barriers we don’t understand? What do we do? During this presentation you will gain a better understanding of some of the unique gifts students on the Autism Spectrum bring to your class. We also will discuss typical challenges that arise when working with these students. You will leave with strategies and resources to help you better assist and serve your students.

Participants will walk away with an understanding of ADA, your responsibilities, and the role of SAS. We will discuss student rights and responsibilities and you will obtain and increased confidence in working with this population.

Marie Ostermeier earned her Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Texas and has 15 years experience working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. Currently Marie works in Student Accessibility Services at Cypress Creek. Prior to Austin Community College Marie worked for College Living Experience, a postsecondary support program for individuals with developmental disabilities. Marie has presented to educators and professionals at multiple venues including Texas Autism Conference, Texas Transition Conference and the ACC 2017 Tutor Conference.
