GA16: Personal Energy Management

Hours: 1.5

We live in changing times both on campus and in our personal lives. When introducing Guided Pathways, Dr. Cook stated, “You can talk all day, but if you don’t start acting, you’re not going to really learn what’s working and what’s not working.” And that is also true as we talk to students about how to manage their time, their energy and their resources to maximize their potential. How can we help students to understand how to notice when they are depleted, whether to engage in rest or activity that refuels them and improves their productivity? In fact, how can we do that for ourselves and model Personal Energy Management?

This 90 minute presentation is designed to facilitate participants exploration and identification of their own management plan that incorporates best practice around productivity and also the reality of demanding course schedules and the potential for long work days and weeks. The process begins in advance of attendance when participants complete a Values Survey. Having time to reflect on these questions ahead of time allows participants to come to the presentation ready to discuss what is important to them. We will incorporate personal values into decision making around how to maximize our productivity while improving our quality of life.

1) A clear sense of personal values and how they can be used for individual decision making
2) An awareness of indicators of depletion both generally and specific to the participant.
3) A Personal Energy Management plan for replenishment and renewal on a regular basis to prevent burnout and improve productivity.
