TLED: Experiential Learning In The Online Classroom: How To Move Beyond Active Learning
Hours: 1
Challenge
While experiential learning has been embraced in the face-to-face classroom, it has been largely ignored in online education. This oversight is not based on pedagogical irrelevance; instead, practical barriers associated with online learning have limited its use. This webinar will help faculty overcome (what is often considered) constraints of asynchronous, remote learning to incorporate experiential learning strategies within their online courses. This webinar's emphasis is on concrete examples of how the Cycle of Experiential Learning can be applied within the online classroom.
Key Takeaway
The benefits gained from experiential learning are invaluable. This webinar offers concrete strategies for incorporating experiential learning in the online classroom to promote an active, engaged, student-centered learning environment.
Overview
As the name implies, the foundation of experiential learning is that students via an experience; traditionally, these experiences include apprenticeships, volunteerism, service learning, or internships. While these out-of-class experiences are valuable, it can be challenging to coordinate this learning within the unique context of online education. In this webinar, we will explore how to apply the Cycle of Experiential Learning within the online classroom to actively engage students by integrating problem-based, case-based, and project-based design models. Following the four steps of the Experiential Learning Cycle, the webinar will offer suggestions and guidelines for effectively integrating concrete experiences, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. Central to this approach is creating a student-centered environment that allows each learner to construct their own experiences and engage in an ongoing, cyclical process to reinforce progressive learning.
