SSD20: Role-Playing Simulation in the Classroom

Hours: 1

I had great success with a role-playing exercise that I developed as a Faculty Fellow at ACC. Students acted out the steps taken by a computer CPU at its most fundamental level. The literal process of physically being computer instructions and walking to imitate data transfers within computer memory was very effective and well-received. I will be reporting both that method and its success, and my current attempts at modifying the exercise within Blackboard Collaborate. At the time of the conference I will be finishing a summer session in which I have made my attempts, and I will be reporting results fresh out of the oven. Since the workshop is online, we will try out the online version of the exercise and contribute to its continuing evolution

A participant walks away with:
  • An appreciation for the difference between live classroom role playing demonstrations and the issues involved in modifying such exercises into an online environment.

Presenter:

Most importantly, I am married to a woman of extraordinary talent and patience (necessary with me) and father of three terrific people. I have been a computer programmer since I was 16, in 1966. I have an undergraduate degree in a Scholar's Honors program ("Plan II") from the University of Texas, and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee. In between I studied Urban Planning and worked as a community developer. I have found that blending Science and the Liberal Arts is endlessly invigorating and inspiring. My focus in Computer Science has been developing software tools, not to facilitate classroom technique but to actively transmit a learning experience to students. I began classroom teaching at ACC in 2004 in the department of Computer Science and was a member of Faculty Fellows cohort 3. I recently finished a year in the Teaching and Learning Academy. I have, in my time, been a performing musician (drums and guitar), a published songwriter (not quite as glorious as that sounds), a guest lecturer at National Taiwan University, and a member of the Religious Society of Friends.

This workshop will be held virtually via BB Collaborate. To access the workshop, go to the Summer Software Day webpage at https://tled.austincc.edu/development-opportunities/programs/summer-software-day/ and click the "Connect" button on the day of the conference.

If any accommodations are needed for this workshop, please email facdev@austincc.edu as soon as possible but at least five days before the workshop. Please include the name of the workshop. You will be contacted by a member of our staff to discuss your specific needs. Thank you.
