SSD20: Using Journals to Engage Your Online Students

Hours: 1

As an instructor, do you often find yourself exasperated by students who seek out answers via a solutions manual posted on the internet versus engaging themselves in a meaningful learning experience? If so, consider integrating writing assignments in your courses that require your students to engage with the course material through a process of self-reflection and critical thinking. In this session we will explore the use of journal assignments where the students are required to find the answers within themselves and not on the internet. This is a hands on session where you will work through the process of creating journals in Blackboard, developing engaging journal prompts and formulating a strategy for grading the journals in a timely manner and providing meaningful feedback to your students.

A participant walks away with:
  • Create a journal assignment in Blackboard.
  • Develop an engaging journal prompt.
  • Formulate a strategy for grading journals and providing meaningful feedback for the student.
