SSD20: Empathy in the Online Classroom

Hours: 1

As educators move their coursework online, many have concerns about bullying, decreased engagement, and depersonalization in the digital classroom. The online environment can foment all of these things, but with mindful implementation it can also foment the opposite--by cultivating empathy. Empathy can foster deeper communication, enhance student experiences, and assist in the achievement of academic goals for a variety of courses--including the humanities, math and science. Moreover, infusing the online classroom with opportunities for empathy can build equity, by expanding how a diverse set of students make sense of and interact with the coursework, with each other, and with the instructor. Cultivating empathetic experiences encourages student success, and increases the chance that students will come away from the course with a deeper understanding of the material, of the world, and of themselves as human beings.

A participant walks away with:
  • A deeper understanding of their course materials, and of their students' experiences. Participants will leave with sample assignments, and with tools and ideas for cultivating empathy in their own assignments--no matter what courses they teach. Participants will gain insight into how cultivating empathy can build equity in the classroom, and the world.
