SSD20: Creative Problem Solving Tools

Hours: 1

How might we stretch beyond our standard approach when problem solving in higher education? How might we entertain new possibilities? A powerful muscle is to develop your creative leadership through "design thinking, human-centered design and liberating structures", I will share my unique "designer logic" for how I approach problem solving creatively.

Walk through discussing design thinking principles, the process, share real-world examples of human centered design in action at the College, and imagine "what if" possibilities for how you might introduce the approach on your own!

Do you want to take this workshop but short on time? Email me and we can discuss, but let me leave you with this tip! Asking "How do I approach X at the hand of Y?" is what we call Wicked Problems in design, this is a great place to visit, start with language in your Question. Then strive to balance what is desirable from a user/learner's point of view and ideate with what is feasible with technology and viable from a business factors perspective.

A participant walks away with:
  • The opportunity to develop a "common language" through the following: Become familiar with Design Thinking through an introductory overview of foundations, then we "put it to use" by discovering the framework of Human Centered Design I use in my work and finally integrate and experience the approach of Liberating Structures that introduce tiny shifts in the way we communicate, collaborate and relate to one another.
  • This workshop is intended to be introductory in nature and will share the invitation to "immersive in depth" workshops of the same topic. Please email Vanessa if you have any questions! (vmedina@austincc.edu)
*NOTE* This delivery will be "traditional" in delivery style and will use engagement with the audience (mute/unmute, group chat, answering questions) in order to "experience" some modalities the employee is expected to engage and "be present". A communication to the group registrants will be expected at a minimum 3 days before the workshop to answer any questions.

Presenter:

Vanessa Medina-Flores – I am a “multi-disciplinarian” chameleon working in Professional Development (LRD) for the last 6 years and overall 12 years in Higher Ed. I have experience in Higher Education, K-12 Operations, Banking and Retail Customer Service, Web Design, Web/Mobile Interaction Design and Lead Manager/Initiator of people, projects, teams, initiatives and products.

On the surface level - This means that my “techno-digital dexterities" (hard skill sets) allow me to use my experiences to bridge organizational learning (employee learning) with creative, complex problem solving. My experiences are primarily rooted in Design (organizational communications and learning), Visual Communications, Organizational Learning, Program Management and developing others through mentoring or coaching affiliations.

This workshop will be held virtually via BB Collaborate. To access the workshop, go to the Summer Software Day webpage at https://tled.austincc.edu/development-opportunities/programs/summer-software-day/ and click the "Connect" button on the day of the conference.

If any accommodations are needed for this workshop, please email facdev@austincc.edu as soon as possible but at least five days before the workshop. Please include the name of the workshop. You will be contacted by a member of our staff to discuss your specific needs. Thank you.
