SSD20: Creating Accessible Materials for Distance Learning

Hours: 1

Creating accessible documents makes distance learning more usable for all students, not just those with disabilities. This workshop will provide instruction on creating accessible materials for virtual classrooms (word, pdf, ppt, etc). We will demonstrate accessibility checkers across various platforms, including Blackboard Ally. Topics will also include headings and word styles, scanning best practices, and writing alt text.

A participant walks away with:
  • Describe basic accessibility principles
  • Create accessible documents across various formats (word, pdf, ppt, etc)
  • Use Blackboard Ally’s features
  • Identify accessibility resources and tools within Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat DC, as well as at ACC and online
Presenters:

Meg Allen Kareithi is the Accessibility Coordinator in ACC's Alt Text and Media Department. Previously she was the Testing & Assistive Technology Coordinator for the University of Texas at Austin. As a former adjunct instructor she has a passion for ensuring that learning environments are accessible to all students. She has a Master's of History from Tulane University.

Sean Loraas is the Accessibility Technician in ACC's Alt Text and Media Department. He has worked at ACC for over 20 years.
