SSD19: Synchronous Classes: A marriage of in-class and online learning

Online classes can feel isolating, and in-class session locations may come with transportation challenges. Blackboard’s Collaborate Ultra is an add-on program that allows for instructors and students to be online together, but in disparate locations. Ask your students to be online at a time certain, then present, discuss, and collaborate together. You can present lectures, discuss concepts, field questions, separate into discussion groups, review videos or websites and generally hold class much as you would in a physical location. If you are interested in integrating occasional synchronous classes to your curriculum, come try out the software in a lab setting. Seating limited to 12 attendees.
At the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
•Explore ways to use synchronous class options as a part of both in-class and online courses
•Discuss data that support the effectiveness of integrating personal connections for online courses
•Practice using Collaborate Ultra’s synchronous software features

While receiving her bachelor’s degree from the Hilton School for Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston, Liz began working in the culinary intern program with Starwood Hotels, giving her a strong background for later work in catering sales, food and beverage operations and conference and event management. Liz has been teaching with ACC since 2004, teaching both online and in-class. Examining online learning trends and applications has lead to her interest in integrating synchronous classes into current class offerings.
