Presentation focus: Captivating student’s attention with graphics in collaborative shared knowledge
Description: I will explain the use of concept mapping as a teaching strategy to engage students collaborating as a team. Attendees will be provided with a passage for comprehension. The teams will organize and innovate a graphic design of a concept map on a post-it pad. A team member will represent and explain the concept map. The class will use their cell-phones and vote on www.mentimeter.com for the winning team, whose concept map captures the meaning of the story provided.
Techniques: Concept map as a teaching strategy
Tools: Post-it pads, colored pens, computer, cell-phones
Innovation: Team creates a graphic design on a post-i pad
Objectives: After the session, participants will be able to:
1. Apply concept map as a teaching strategy to their lectures and classroom.
2. Encourage students to synergistically integrate their creative knowledge as a team.
3. Facilitate student's learning by providing hands-on activities.
Joyce Tolofari is an associate professor of the Professional Nursing department of the Austin Community College. Currently pursuing a doctoral program, Doctor of Nursing (DNP) at the University of Texas at Austin, school of nursing (UT SON). I have been an educator with the ACC nursing department since 2014 upon graduation with my masters at UT SON, and serves ACC with a team of professors in educating the fundamentals of nursing to aspiring nurses. We prepare them into becoming providers of efficient, effective and patient-focused nurses in Texas and beyond. |
