According to the Government Accounting Office eleven percent or just over two hundred thousand undergraduates are students with learning disabilities and attending post secondary institutions. These students often struggle in our classrooms often without our knowledge. This workshop will inform you of the rise in postsecondary attendance of this special population and bring awareness of how to better increase meeting the needs of these students so that they will be successful in our classrooms and beyond.

Participants will be able to take a different and more expanded approach when it comes to working with and supporting students with learning or hidden disabilities. Participants will be able to have additional resources that will enable them to help these students be successful as this special population demographic will continue to have an increased presence at post secondary institutions to pursue their academic dreams.

Cynthia Brewer has been an adjunct professor with Austin Community College for the past six years. She teaches in the INRW and Student Development departments. She has taught in both secondary and postsecondary institutions for the past 17 years often working with students with reading and learning disabilities as well as, the general ed student population. She is currently working toward completing her doctoral degree in Developmental Education specializing in Literacy. Her current research interests include the postsecondary access and success for students of color with specific reading and learning disabilities. Cynthia is also the parent of a college student with a learning disability and is a certified reading specialist and dyslexia practitioner.
