SDD19: It Takes a Village: Supporting Students with Autism

Hours: 2.83

It takes a village to raise a child is a proverb which means it takes an entire community of different people in order for children to experience and grow in a safe environment. The same can be said about encouraging students to persist and complete at ACC, especially for our students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). During this presentation you will gain a better understanding of typical challenges students with ASD experience along with some of the common misunderstandings. We will then transition into a panel discussion made up of campus resources. The panel discussion will demonstrate that with collaboration and understanding we can create a village that provides a safe environment for all to grow.

Participants will walk away with a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the challenges that may present on campus or in your classroom. You will collaborate with people in different roles at ACC to learn when to call on your village for assistance.

Marie Ostermeier earned her Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Texas and has over 15 years experience working with individuals with autism.
