SDD19: Fostering Vocabulary Development and Background Knowledge in College Courses

Hours: 1.33

In this workshop we will discuss research on vocabulary acquisition, and some activities instructors can use in their courses to support vocabulary development and background knowledge.

Participants will walk away with a social approach to discussing concepts, technical, and essential vocabulary in their courses.

Elizabeth Frye, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Integrated Reading and Writing Department at ACC. In her career, Elizabeth has worked with students ages 10-adult, taught pre-service teachers at Miami University (OH) and the University of Virginia, and dedicated eleven years to working with underprepared students at Lane Community College (OR) and Austin Community College.
