SDD19: Building Community in the Classroom and Beyond

Hours: 1.33

What does it mean to have community in the classroom? Isn’t it natural - you have the students, you have a professor, instant community, right? Creating community is not automatic - it requires mindful interactions between students and faculty. Never fear: it is easy to attain! This session will include active instructional strategies to craft community in your classroom regardless of the number of classes you teach, the amount of time you have in class, or the location of the class. Activities will be between 5-8 minutes each so they can easily be implemented at any time during the semester.
In addition to classroom activities, participants will learn about opportunities to engage in the larger ACC community by utilizing campus resources. Participants will also learn the importance of community and the benefits to students and faculty. This session focuses on the faculty values of inclusion and teaching.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:

Discovering the value of community in the classroom and on campus

Highlighting spaces on campus to foster community

Exploring a variety of instructional strategies that promote interaction and inclusion in the learning environment

Creating and modeling an atmosphere of student-‐faculty and student-‐student interactions
