SDD19: Opportunities for Engagement with Open Educational Resources (OER)

Hours: 1.33

The results are in; Open Educational Resources (OER) increase student engagement. Research shows that students find OER materials more relevant, easier to navigate, and better aligned with learning objectives than traditional textbooks. This interactive workshop will give you hands-on experience finding and using Open Educational Resources.

Participants will experience the first steps in discovering Open Educational Resources (OER) for use in their course and will walk away with an understanding of how to use OER to increase student engagement.

This workshop will be co-presented by Carrie Gits and Ursula Pike.

Carrie Gits is the Head Librarian at Highland Campus Library. As the Library Services Open Educational Resources (OER) Facilitator, she is involved in the Achieving the Dream OER Degree Initiative as a member of the grant advisory team and the College’s OER Work Group. Her responsibilities include supporting grant faculty and faculty librarians through training and information sharing. In addition she helps faculty find and evaluate OER for their courses. She authored the OER Libguide as a resource for ACC faculty interested in OER. This academic year Carrie is also participating in the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program.

Ursula Pike is the Instructional Initiatives Coordinator for Academic Programs. She coordinates ACC's Z-Degree initiative which allows students to earn a General Studies A.A. or A.S. degree without having to buy any textbooks.
