SDD19: Connecting Sustainability Across Academic Disciplines

Hours: 1.33

A follow up on the Energy & Sustainability Office survey of ACC students and faculty where a majority of both groups indicated a desire to incorporate sustainability examples into coursework of unrelated disciplines. We will communicate available resources and provide tailored academic examples that can be applied in the classroom. We also would like to hear from faculty on possible ways to meet the demand for sustainability in the classroom and what resources could or should be made available in the future.

Participants will learn how to engage students across a variety of topics leveraging sustainability principles such as environmental conservation, wildlife, climate change, energy conservation, life cycle costs, waste management, environmental justice, and more through available ACC examples and resources.

Caleb Crow is an educator, scientist, father, engineer, and conservationist who currently serves as Energy Conservation Manager and Adjunct Faculty for Government at Austin Community College District (ACC). His duties include energy and water conservation, renewable energy, and other sustainability initiatives. Prior to joining ACC, Caleb’s experience included managing energy and sustainability at Texas Tech University, greenhouse gas reduction at the Clinton Climate Initiative, energy efficiency contracting for the Department of Energy, wildlife preservation and education at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and researching climate science with Nobel Laureate Dr. Katharine Hayhoe. Caleb earned a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, a Master’s in Public Administration, and is a LEED AP.
