SDD18: A is For Ally...Allies in Action
Hours: 3
Sadly, marriage equality didn’t end heterosexism or make trans and
gender non-binary people fully accepted. This means that LGBTQIA students need active allies
on their campus and in their lives. In this workshop we will go over some of the basics to make
sure that everyone is on the same page. We will then explore some of the issues and barriers
facing LGBTQIA students on and off campus. We will then identify ways to be an active ally to
students whether they are new to the coming out process or activists who are working to
change the world.
Participant Benefit (What will participant walk away with):
• Participants will learn the latest language and how to navigate an ever-growing
vocabulary
• Participants will explore the issue and barriers to students on and off campus
• Participants will learn strategies to be an active ally
• Participants will identity ways to support students whether they are newly coming out,
just living their lives or activities changing the world
