SDD18: IN-clusive Teaching: How to Recognize Cultural Diversity in the Classroom

Hours: 1.3

In your role as faculty or staff at Austin Community College, you understand how important it is to create an environment that respects each student’s cultural identity. Every interaction, both verbal and nonverbal in nature, depends heavily on effective interpersonal communication. But, what do you say? How do you say it…without offending? What’s appropriate today may be inappropriate tomorrow. This workshop details how to become more IN-clusive.

By attending the workshop on “cultural diversity in the classroom,” faculty members will (1) understand the basic concepts tied to inclusive teaching, (2) get a sense of how a classroom's cultural climate can affect student performance, (3) adopt new ways to prepare a lesson plan anchored in cultural inclusion, (4) train palates for “appropriate” classroom discourse, and (5) gain feedback on current teaching styles.

A professional lecturer for more than 15 years, Darrick Nicholas has served as spokesperson for various private and public entities. Since 2005, he has taught various courses in public relations, journalism and communication studies. He joined ACC's Department of Communication Studies in 2015 as an adjunct instructor.
