Seeking More Finesse and Flair in Teaching ENGL 1302?
Hours: 2
A Reflective, Interactive Workshop to Design Hooks and Discussion Streams
How we introduce a short story may make the difference between a flat lecture to a classroom full of glazed eyes and a spirited discussion among engaged, invested learners. This workshop provides you with multiple strategies for launching a story, and gives you time to discuss with other instructors specific stories and the "hook" strategies that might work best for those stories.
Strategic planning for discussion can make the difference between posing, then answering, your own questions and a discussion where students authentically challenge students intellectually. Vibrant discussions include challenges to give textual support for their interpretations of central idea. As well, vibrant discussions include using biographical information to support interpretations of authors' intentions and tone. Finally, vibrant discussion include analysis of how the elements of fiction work together to create an effective, well-told tale. This workshop provides strategies and questions that keep the students interacting with other students to reach critical, analytical rigor in their discussions. You will have time to shape a discussion strategy for a specific story from your course syllabus.
Join your colleagues for a session devoted entirely to strategies to make ENGL 1302 more enjoyable to teach and more impactful on students, particularly how they look at the world and literature. |
