SSD17: Grading Tool using Excel VBA
Hours: 1.25
Hand grading a large batch of student essays, exams, projects, labs, etc. must be done carefully, It can be laborious, time consuming and error-prone. A "mass customization" approach allows each student to get a fair, accurate grade with detailed custom feedback, while reducing instructor workload. This workshop presents the evolution of a custom-programmed grading tool using Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). This tool is used by the presenter for grading programming labs. Design, implementation and practical use of this grading tool will be presented. Enhancement ideas and suggestions are welcome.
A major potential benefit of computers is to automate boring, repetitive tasks. This is easier said than done. It can be difficult to get the right tool where needed. This workshop shows how Excel can be enhanced to automate some grading tasks. Careful use of this tool can improve the quality, quantity, accuracy and consistency of instructor-to-student feedback and grading. A brief intro on how to write Excel VBA macros is provided.
