SDD17: Using Classroom Response Systems to Improve Student Performance

Hours: 1.25

Classroom Response Systems such as clickers or web applications that facilitate teacher-student interactions during classroom actively engage the students instead of monotonous lectures. They have been shown to increase student attendance, participation, self-evaluation and performance. It can promote team-based learning and problem based learning. This workshop will help evaluate various classroom response systems and their pros and cons. In addition, participants will be practicing selected response systems for immediate use in their classes.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:
1. Knowledge of the various classroom response systems.
2. Effective use of such classroom response systems in small classroom settings.
3. Practical knowledge of how to use selected classroom response systems.

Dr. Sathasivan is a Senior Lecturer in Biology Instructional Office and Molecular Biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin and an Adjunct Professor of Biology in Austin Community College. He has over 25 years of teaching experience and won several teaching awards including the Board of Regents Teaching Award at state level among 9 universities and 6 medical centers in the University of Texas System.
