SDD17: Discover the ACC Center for Experiential Learning

Hours: 1.25

Join us as we discuss the new ACC Center for Experiential Learning! We'll consider the importance of experiential learning in workforce areas of study, experiential learning options arranged through the center, how the center works with departments to develop programs, and a quick tour of the CEL website.

Participants will gain an understanding of the new ACC Center for Experiential Learning, the importance of experiential learning, experiential learning options (internships / coops) arranged through the center, how we can assist with program development with your department, and familiarity with the CEL website.

Sam Greer PhD - Director
Sam Greer currently holds the position of Director of the Center for Experiential Learning at Austin Community College. In this capacity, he leads the college’s efforts to engage industry partners, develop programs with employers, and place students in positions in their fields of study. Previously, he was Director of Accelerated Programmer Training, a Department of Labor funded competency-based education program developed to substantially reduce the training time required to earn computer programming certificates and degrees. Prior to working at ACC, Dr. Greer worked in the K-12 system as a high school social studies teacher, principal, and charter school superintendent. He has served as a trustee on numerous nonprofit boards and advisory boards with particular interest in schools and foster care organizations. He is currently a trustee of the East Communities YMCA and the Metro Area YMCA budget and finance committee, as well as a board member of Capital Academies.
Sam earned a PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin (with a minor in nonprofit management from the LBJ School for Public Affairs), a masters in history from Texas State University, and a bachelors degree in economics from UT-Austin. He is an avid traveler, History Book-of-the-Month aficionado, gardener, and tinkerer. He loves to spend time with his wife, Marcy, and his three daughters, Jenny (24), Julia (19), and Delia (9.)
Clark Shaffer - Coordinator, IT Placement and Employer Outreach
Clark is a native Texan having earned his BBA from UNT and now working on his Master’s at Texas Tech is highly engaged in helping develop internship and career pathways for ACC students. Currently with ACC as Adjunct Professor and Coordinator of IT Placement and Employer outreach, Clark brings years of experience not only in Technology but also in work force development. In 2006 Clark left the technology field to take advantage of a life-long goal to serve in the Peace Corps to work in Community & Economic Development finding a subsequent passion which blended perfectly with his years of experience in Technology. Prior to joining ACC, Clark spent 7 years with both Texas Workforce Commission and Workforce Solution as Business Services Consultant for Travis County employers.
