SDD17: How to Teach So Students Will Listen
Hours: 1.25
In this interactive workshop, there will be a brief overview of the listening process, barriers to effective listening, understanding different types of listening, and explaining listening styles. Then, participants will look at their teaching styles and discuss and analyze ways they can teach to a student population with a variety of listening styles.
After attending our workshop on “how students listen” college faculty members will (1) have a deeper understanding of the stages in the listening process, (2) the common barriers to effective listening that students experience in the classroom, (3) the differences between listening for pleasure, understanding, criticism, and empathy, (4) how a student’s listening style can impact his/her ability to remain attentive during class, and finally, (5) how to adapt one’s teaching style to better help maximize a student’s listening potential.
