SDD17: Don't be scared: Understanding ASL and Deaf Culture

Hours: 1.25

This workshop is designed to improve your basic communication skill with deaf people and basic signing ability that is frequently used in ACC setting, as well as a survival guide to signing. While we cannot separate our language and culture, we will provide guide for participants to grow a better understanding of Deaf Culture through demonstration and activities. The goal of this workshop is to bring comfort in everybody while working around deaf people.

A participant will walk away with:
-A better understanding of Deaf Culture
-Knowledge of how to communicate with deaf people in five ways
-A better understanding how to interact with deaf people
-Political Correct Terminologies

Fallon is the fourth generation in her family to be born Deaf. While holding Masters in Interpretation from Gallaudet University, Fallon has been a faculty member of various Interpreter Training Programs for the past 7 years, and currently serves as Department Chair of the ASL Interpreting Training at ACC. In addition to her duties as a faculty member, Fallon is a Certified Deaf Interpreter working in various settings and workshop presenter on interpreting topics. Fallon is a core Deaf community member and frequently attends and supports national events such as serving as co-chair of the 2015 National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf conference. She is passionate about giving deaf children their rights to ASL and access to qualified interpreters in educational setting.
