SDD16: If you find inspiration in others, you need to cite it!
Hours: 1.5
Objective: Workshop participants will discuss academic honesty in today’s cut and paste world; proactive assignment techniques; ACC tools to avoid plagiarism; and, learn about integrating library resources into course content.
How do faculty help students avoid plagiarism? How do faculty ethically use information in course content? What do other faculty do to “plagiarism-proof” their assignments? This engaging, interactive workshop will discuss first-time-in-college and new-student myths and challenges about plagiarism and how faculty can and should be proactive about academic honesty. Networking, small group work and hands-on learning will help faculty develop anti-plagiarism strategies and learn how other educators are developing assignments and course content to assist students with understanding academic honesty.
The Austin Community College Library Services Information Literacy (IL) Team affirms and supports the educational mission of ACC Libraries. Multiple literacies, including digital, visual, textual and technological, as well as critical thinking concepts, are now included with information literacy as key competencies in today’s required workforce and gen ed competency sets. How do students learn to select and use the proper technology for the task at hand? Do students understand online information formats - is it a web site or an ebook? Are students able to deduce information from images? The ACC LS IL Team manages college-wide information literacy initiatives such as creating the award-winning Research Success Tutorials Suite found on the ACC Libraries home page library.austincc.edu, designing information literacy content based on student outcomes, integrating assessment into faculty-librarian instruction and guest lecture requests, and supporting student success and equity. Team members include Courtney Mlinar (Elgin), Irena Klaic (Rio Grande), Ashley Carr (Highland), Betsy Young (Round Rock), Dave Wilson (Highland) and Kristyn Pittman (Northridge). |
