SDD16: The Power of Listening: The Force Awakens

Hours: 1.5

Objective: Participants will learn about and practice ways to become more effective, active listeners.

As educators, effective communication with our students is both a priority and a necessity. One of the most important aspects of competent communication is one that is often overlooked: active listening. In this workshop, participants will identify their own listening styles, learn about barriers to effective listening and how to overcome those barriers, and will explore and use tools for effective listening. In this reflective, hands-on session, participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to be effective listeners in the classroom.

This workshop is facilitated by three adjunct faculty members from the speech communication department of Austin Community College: Lisa Fitzgerald, Shelley Friend, and Sara Shippey.
Lisa Fitzgerald loves teaching communication and has over ten years of experience teaching both at ACC and Penn State. Lisa has a passion for service learning, and great enthusiasm for teaching communication in different contexts.
Shelley Friend has a wealth of communication experience, both on the collegiate level for 28 years, as well as serving as a communication consultant for various organizations for 30 years. Holding specialties in intercultural studies, language, and education, Shelley was both a student and a faculty member in the Fulbright scholar program in Bulgaria.

Both presenters have a passion for interpersonal communication, and consider "active listening" one of the most important skills one can have in the classroom and in life.
