SDD16: From Combat to Classroom: Working with Student Veterans, From VA Benefits to Classroom Accommodations
Hours: 1.5
Objective: Help faculty/staff gain knowledge of working with this student population and understanding the accommodations students with PTSD/TBI may need in the classroom to level the playing field. After attending this workshop, participants will develop greater awareness of ways in which the military experience impacts veterans' learning experiences.
Wounded Warriors, particularly those with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are returning to higher education from combat at a very fast rate. This workshop will help faculty and staff gain a better understanding of what these student veterans are dealing with as they transition from soldier to student. Presentation will include information on PTSD/TBI, how these diagnoses effect students in the classroom, and classroom accommodations that are appropriate to level the playing field for this growing student population.
Lauren Sebel has been with ACC's Student Accessibility Services since 2007 and is currently the SAS Coordinator II at the Highland Campus. She will complete her doctorate in Higher Education Administration with a community college emphasis within the next year and is writing her dissertation on effective accommodations for student veterans with PTSD and/or TBI.
Brad Robichaux will discuss Vet Success on Campus and services offered at the Veterans Resource Center (VRC). VRC staff is available to help veterans and their dependents enroll at ACC, pay for college, and tap into the rich network of support and services to help transition into and through college toward their graduation and/or transfer.
Jeff Moe will give suggestions for enhancing veterans’ academic experience and handling difficulties that may arise within the classroom or college environment. |
