GA14: Asian Texans: Our Histories and Our Lives
Hours: 1.5
Take a journey through the history of Asian Americans in Texas. From the Filipino cabin boy who jumped off a slave ship to fish the Texas coast to the Chinese railroad workers who settled among the Black community of Robertson County, this history fascinates and offers insight into the history of Texas itself.
Other chapters in this history include the stories of the early Japanese rice plantation families, including Taro Kishi who played running back for the Texas A&M Aggies in the 1920s; the story of the "Pershing Chinese" who escaped massacre at the hands of Pancho Villa by escaping to Texas during the Mexican Revolution; the struggles of the early Indian Texans, Filipino Texans and Korean Texans; the story of the Vietnamese Texans' war with the Ku Klux Klan on the Texas coast; the story of Bangladeshi Texan Rais Bhuiyan as he tried to save the life of Mark Stroman, who shot Bhuiyan in the face for being Muslim; and many other fascinating tales over the past two hundred years.
Please bring your questions, as this is a topic that very few historians know much about, and presenter Irwin Tang encourages professors to incorporate the information into their lectures.
Irwin Tang is the principal author of the comprehensive history, Asian Texans: Our Histories and Our Lives, published several years ago. He is a writer and licensed professional counselor, as well as an adjunct professor in the ACC CreativeWriting Department. |
