GA14: Humanity in War: Law of War and How to Engage Students as Global Thinkers Across the Disciplines

Hours: 1.5

Come enjoy a module developed to introduce the rules of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Discussions surrounding how IHL can be related to curricula in various disciplines, as well as sample assignments and resources will be provided.

IHL is part of international law and is also called law of war and law of armed conflict. An understanding of this international law is important to educating globally-oriented students. A significant number of Americans are uninformed about IHL.

According to Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan, Dean of the Academic Board, United States Military Academy at West Point, ʺit is essential to understand and respect the rule of law because that defines what we are about as a nation and the leader of the free world. When others do not respect or follow the law, it is even more important that we remember who we are and what we stand for as a country.

(This work was supported in part by a grant from ACC's International Programs.)
