GA14: Tools & Tips for Making ACC Welcoming to LGBTQ Students

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students often dont feel welcome in different spaces. In this workshop you will learn tools and tips to make ACC a safe and WELCOMING place for LGBTQ students. We will discuss vocabulary and strategies for using language well, talk about some of the common concerns of the LGBTQ community, and strategies for going beyond safety to making sure people feel welcome and included. There will be time for questions and resources for future learning will be provided.
Presenter, Shane Whalley, is the Education Coordinator of the Gender and Sexuality Center in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. Ze facilitates workshops for students, faculty and staff on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, as well as on sexism, and on the concepts of power, privilege and oppression. Shane is also a member of the Intergroup Dialogue teaching team. Ze received hir Masters degree in Social Work at UT and is a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW). Shane has worked as a psychotherapist in several non-profits in Austin, working mostly with LGBT clients. Shane has a passion for making space for people to explore gender and sexuality. |
