GA14: Closing the Loop - Making Assessment Meaningful
Hours: 1.5
| Assessment is a process that begins with writing measurable learning outcomes, continues with performing a meaningful assessment of the extent to which students achieve them, and gathering the results of the assessment. These results should then be used to "close the loop" by informing the development and implementation of action strategies intended to improve student performance. Each of these steps, however, poses significant challenges for which we, as faculty, were often never formally trained. In some cases, there are expectations that we assess outcomes outside our regular curriculum, such as writing in a math course or personal responsibility in an English class. This workshop is offered to support faculty in addressing these issues. The format will be flipped in comparison to most workshops; participants will be expected to review online materials beforehand and, based on feedback, the workshop itself will focus on those topics the participants most want covered. Topics include: writing measurable learning outcomes, types of assessment and ways to assess challenging outcomes (e.g., ethics), how assessment data feeds into the Academic Master Plan, general education, and many others. |
