SSSS: Lions, Tigers, and Ethics, Oh My!
Hours: 3
| (FOR COUNSELORS ONLY) Being a licensed professional counselor entails keeping abreast of legislative mandates and their impact on ethical practices. Using a light-hearted context, ethical challenges including changes in legislation and rules, social media, HIPPA updates, and optimal practice guidelines will be discussed. Particular attention will be given to the role of ethics in working with college students and their developmental issues.

Learning Outcome(s):
Participants will be updated on legislative changes and the rules governing their continued licensure. Participants will identify at least two ethical practices, which need to be addressed and develop a plan to apply needed changes. Participants will discuss the ethical use of social media as it applies to client communication. Participants will identify two college developmental issues and their ethical repercussions as well as develop a plan for assisting clients in addressing these issues.

Marie Welsch, PhD, LPC, earned her graduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Special Education; she has both an educational and counseling background. She has been in private practice for ten years and been involved in education settings for many years, from teaching children with special needs from early childhood through adulthood and serving as a coordinator and administrator. She has also taught at Austin Community College as an adjunct professor in Child Development for almost ten years and at East Tennessee State University for two years as an associate professor. She is currently working with a state agency in the educational side of juvenile corrections. |
