SDD14: Humanity in War: ACC's Peace & Conflict Studies & Engaging Students as Global Thinkers
Hours: 1.5
Please join me in the first presentation of a module developed to introduce the rules of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). (I will use your feedback to modify the materials.) The final version will be shared with interested faculty for use in their courses. We will also discuss how IHL can be related to curricula in various disciplines, and I will share with you sample assignments and resources.
IHL is part of international law and is also called law of war and law of armed conflict. An understanding of this international law is important to educating globally-oriented students. A significant number of Americans are uninformed about IHL. For example, in a 2011 poll, 29% of adults and 37% of young people believed that it was at least sometimes acceptable to deprive civilians in combat areas of food, medicine, or water in order to weaken the enemy. According to Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan, Dean of the Academic Board, United States Military Academy at West Point, ʺit is essential to understand and respect the rule of law because that defines what we are about as a nation and the leader of the free world. When others do not respect or follow the law, it is even more important that we remember who we are and what we stand for as a country.ʺ
