SDD14: Intellectual Character: An Ignored Dimension of Student Development and Success
Hours: 1.5
One huge lacunae in our efforts to help students be successful is the neglect of intellectual character. While some of ACCs own initiatives are laudable, it is clear that the intellectual character of our students has never been an explicitly major focal point of concern in anything we have come up with to date at the institutional level.
During this session, I will introduce you to some important work being done in virtue epistemology, a field in philosophy that looks out how certain character traits are relevant to being a GOOD learner and a GOOD thinker. This lecture will include some interaction focused on relevant topics such as cognitive powers, competencies, and temperaments, with an emphasis on intellectual virtue. We will also look at a charter school built on intellectual character, one created by a philosopher and an educator (both researchers at a university in California). At the end of the session, we will take a brief look at my sabbatical-enabled contribution to addressing the aforementioned lacunae. I look forward to sharing my intellectual passion with you! |
