GA13: 21st Century Literacy
Hours: 1.5
| While a liberal education is arguably just as important as it ever was (Nussbaum, 1997), all higher education students need to be proficient in a new 21st century literacy. This new literacy includes traditional literacy skills, such as reading, writing, and arguing, and also new literacy skills, such as critical thinking and scientific reasoning (NCTE, 2008; Wagner, 2008; Grubb, 2003, p. 3). Like older forms, the new literacy requires both the ʺeffective useʺ of language and ʺlarge amounts of specific informationʺ that are deemed important by existing curriculums (Hirsch, 1988, pp. 2-3). But 21st century literacy also includes training students in the concept and methods of science, which are developed and practiced in the research university.
I have written a new open-access and interactive textbook called 21st Century Literacy. It is freely available on the web via a non-profit organization I have created: http://www.21centurylit.org/I would like to use the workshop for two purposes: 1) explain what 21st literacy is and how it can be integrated into college courses; 2) explain what tools my free book/website have to offer faculty.
