What does it mean to be a heritage language learner? How can instruction better serve the diverse learning needs of this rather heterogeneous group of learners? What information is useful to know in order to place learners and develop appropriate and effective curriculum and course materials? In answer to these questions, The University of Texas at Austin has implemented a bilingual/bicultural track to the lower-division Spanish language courses starting at the introductory level and continuing up through advanced grammar. As current participants in the development and instruction of these courses, we are eager to share insights gleaned from our experiences and research to assist others in better serving this population of language learners. Our goal for this workshop is to share current research and practices in the field of Heritage Language Acquisition and to engage in an interactive discussion about what this information means for heritage language learners in the language classrooms.
