GA12: You get on my last nerve! Identifying, Understanding & Limiting Biases in Student Interactions

Hours: 1.5

Discourse analysis helps us to understand social interactions. We naturally bring our own biases to interactions with everyone including significant others, children, co-workers, and students. These biases are based on our experiences leading us to see all interactions through our own unique lens. When someone interrupts, doesnt make eye contact, speaks rapidly, etc. we may consider that person to be rude, impatient, disinterested, etc. However, that same interaction may be viewed by the other participant as attempting to show interest and engagement. This presentation will include an introduction to discourse analysis. Participants will gain valuable insight into their own tendencies to judge interactions based on their own experiences and start to learn to remove or at least identify and acknowledge the biases that may undermine those interactions.
