SSSS: Title IX: Rethinking Student Discipline

Hours: 1.5

The Office for Civil Rights released a Dear Colleague letter in April 2011 to clarify OCR guidelines for responding to student sexual misconduct under Title IX. Many of these guidelines seem to place campus disciplinary procedures in the cross hairs and preference a dominant criminal justice narrative without accounting for restorative and social justice principles that reflect the missions and core values of institutions and academia at large. Join our expert presenters as they review recent OCR clarifications through a unique intersection of lenses that inform practice as we consider whether and how new responsibilities align with shared core values and institutional missions. Participants will be encouraged to consider Title IX protocol through lenses that respect individual rights and risk management responsibilities, while giving equal focus to student education and development, community responsibilities and restoration, and creating just environments that support full and equal access and inclusion for all students.
