SDD21: Communication Apprehension in the Community College (Virtual) Classroom
Hours: 1
Apprehension about oral communication is one of the most common forms of social anxiety; and high levels of communication anxiety (CA) can interfere with
the successful completion of assignments, courses, and ultimately a student's degree program. This workshop will highlight the impact of CA in the classroom and provide faculty and staff with tools to use both online and in the classroom to assist students while also increasing retention and success rates.
A participant walks away with:
- An understanding of communication apprehension, how to identify students that may suffer from social anxiety, and practical steps they can take immediately to create alternative assignments to address students' needs while remaining consistent with learning outcomes.
- Participants will also work in small groups to explore online tools to help encourage "quiet" students and facilitate engagement.
Presenter(s):
Dr. Tasha Davis has been a part of the ACC faculty for over 18 years teaching both online and lecture courses in Communication Studies. After years of seeing students fail to complete the oral speaking component in her courses, she decided to take on the issue of communication anxiety during a sabbatical leave during the 2019-2020 academic year. After returning to an online teaching environment, Dr. Davis is excited to share her research with ACC faculty and staff to help further the goals of the Communication Studies department and serve the broader ACC community.
