SDD21: Academic Coaching: Helping Students with "Better Grades, Less Stress" Virtually!
Hours: 1
Make better referrals! ACC has amazing resources: Academic Advisors, Success Coaches, Completion Coaches, Counselors, Tutors and Academic Coaching to name a few. The problem is that they all sound the same! This workshop will help break down each of these resources and share some of the overlapping and distinct service offerings in an effort to help you make more efficient referrals. Next, we’ll take a deeper dive into the Academic Coaching resource and share how this department has pivoted to assist students with online courses and the specific study strategies students need to succeed virtually. A discussion about the new Embedded Learning Support Services (Embedded Academic Coaching and Embedded Tutoring) will also be shared.
A participant walks away with learning the following objectives:
- Describe the Academic Coaching resource and how it differs from some other ACC resources
- Identify ways that Academic Coaching can support students in a virtual environment
- Understand when to refer students and how to properly do so
- Consider how embedding an Academic Coach (and/or ACC tutors) can benefit your course (ACC Faculty)
Presenter(s):
Monica Burmicky, Supervisor for Academic Coaching and Adjunct Instructor in Student Development has been at ACC for almost 4 years. Prior to that, she worked at McLennan Community College, Baylor University, California Baptist University, and Azusa Pacific University where she attained her Bachelors in Business Administration and Masters in College Counseling and Student Development. In between her educational degrees, Monica worked in China for one year, and was a 5th grade teacher for two. For fun she likes to play with her two girls (4 and 1), workout, drink lots of coffee and travel (pre-pandemic).
