SDD21: Online Student Engagement: Creating Presence in Your Distance Learning Course

In this workshop we will explore social, cognitive, and instructor presence as it relates to student engagement. We will learn about the three different types of interactions in the distance learning environment and how we can strive to create a Community of Inquiry in our distance learning courses. Attendees will learn practical tips that they can incorporate right away into their courses to make them more engaging.

Presenter(s):
Eduardo L. Garcia started working at Austin Community College (ACC) in 2010. He started as a Faculty Counselor, then transitioned over to the instructional side of ACC in 2016. Throughout his time at ACC he has served in many roles that include: Counseling Department Chair, Faculty Senator, TACHE Mentor, Assistant Department Chair, and is now one of the Assistant Deans for Distance Education at ACC. He is also a professor in the General Studies and Student Development department.
During his time at ACC, Eduardo earned a second masters degree in Adult and Higher Education and a doctorate degree in Higher Education with programs that offered courses via distance learning so he is aware of the challenges and opportunities distance learning offers. He is an early adopter of Quality Matters (QM) and has completed the QM Applying the Rubric Workshop, the QM Peer Review Certificate, and most recently, in March 2020, the Quality Matters Teaching Online Certificate.
