SDD20: The Privilege of Time: An Economic Reality for Community College Students

Hours: 1.5

Time is a privilege, and this privilege is not commonly available to all community college students. Because of the enormity of their responsibilities outside of the classroom, many community college students do not have the privilege of time to devote to their studies. This lack of privilege has a disproportionate impact on their learning, especially in STEM classes where the deepest level of understanding occurs when making mistakes. But, the economic reality of community college students is that they do not have time to make mistakes. This presentation is designed to promote discussion about the privilege of time, and teaching strategies to enable all students to learn effectively with the time available to them.

A participant walks away with:

An awareness about how the privilege of time disproportionally provides advantage and disadvantage across the community college student population.
