SDD20: Top 10 Ways to Improve Student Engagement with Course Textbooks

Hours: 1.5

Successful adoption of OER requires more than just offering students a free resource; it also means connecting the book to course outcomes, interacting with the book in class, and using an engaging platform. In this workshop, Dr. O'Grady will share research-based practices in improving textbook use among students (and faculty!). During this interactive workshop, faculty will share their own tips and tricks in textbook adoption and compile a top-10 list they will use to improve student engagement this spring. Although the use of OER textbooks inspired this research, this workshop is applicable for anyone that uses a textbook in their course.

A participant walks away with:

Top 10 ways faculty can improve teaching resource (textbook) engagement.

Presenter(s):

Dr. Jack O'Grady is a long-time ACC Biology & Biotechnology program faculty and the new OER task force lead promoting OER adoption across ACC. He returned this fall from a sabbatical where he completed his doctoral work on OER education and created an OER eBook with integrated teaching ancillaries for the Biotechnology Program. A critical aspect of his graduate work was addressing lackluster adoption and use of the first edition biotechnology program OER textbook. https://jackogrady12.wixsite.com/professorjack
