SDD20: Student Journaling: Life Doesn't Come with a Solutions Manual
Hours: 1.5
As an instructor, do you often find yourself exasperated by students who
seek out answers via a solutions manual posted on the internet, versus
engaging themselves in a meaningful learning experience? If so, consider
integrating writing assignments in your courses that require your students
to engage with the course material through a process of self-reflection
and critical thinking. In this session we will explore the use of journal
assignments where the students are required to find the answers within
themselves and not on the internet. This is a hands on session where you
will be working through the process of creating journals in Blackboard,
developing engaging journal prompts and formulating a strategy for how to
grade the journals in a timely manner and provide meaningful feedback to
your students.

1. Create a journal assignment in Blackboard.
2. Develop an engaging journal prompt.
3. Formulate a strategy for grading journals and providing meaningful feedback for the student.
Presenter(s):
Larry G. Stephens is currently a Professor of Accounting and Assistant Dean for Business Studies (Distance Learning and External Partnerships) at Austin Community College District in Austin, Texas. Previously, he taught at both Blinn College and Northern Michigan University. Larry began his career in education in 2009 after more than 20 years of accounting and tax experience in the Oil and Gas and Electric Utility industries. He holds JD and LL.M. degrees from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, a Masters of Science in Taxation from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Bachelors in Business Administration, major in Accounting, from Sam Houston State University.
Larry currently serves as Vice President of Conference Planning for the Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges (TACTYC), and is an active member of the TXCPA as a member of both the Professional Ethics Committee and Relations with Educational Institutions Committee. Additionally, Larry is also a member of the American Institute of CPA's, American Accounting Association, State Bar of Michigan, and the Texas Community College Teachers Association. |
