SDD20: Stinky Feet, Hidden Rules, & High Expectations

A four year old encountered a woman with stinky feet on an airplane. She was violating hidden rules of airplane travel and his expectation of personal space. What does stinky feet have to do with equitable and inclusive practices? As faculty and staff, there are times when our expectations of students require us to engage with the student using their lens not ours. Let’s talk about how you can help students navigate post-secondary hidden rules. This session will focus on striking a balance between establishing an environment of high expectations and accountability with culturally - responsive practices.
A participant walks away with:
Participants will be able to summarize the relationship between diversity, equity, inclusion, hidden rules, and expectations.
Participants will be able to analyze current course policies and instructional practices to strengthen student engagement.
Participants will be able to identify ways to create course policies and instructional practices that advance equity and inclusivity.
Presenter(s):
Corin Caridine most recently received her web development certification from General Assembly before joining ACC as the Manager, Instructional Web Projects. She received her B.S. in Psychology from Texas Christian University and M.Ed. in Urban School Psychology from Howard University. She is a Situational Leadership certified trainer with The Center for Leadership Studies. Corin has over 20 years of professional experience with time spent serving under-resourced communities as a Teacher, School Psychologist, Chief Program Officer, and so much more. She spent two years as a curriculum developer and corporate trainer for a national organization with over 4,000 employees focusing on career pathing, performance management, and leadership development. Corin enjoys working for organizations like ACC that empower under-served populations and looks forward to contributing to the success of our students. |
