SDD20: Mental Illness in Literature: Our Students, Our Responsibilities

Hours: 1.5

Our responsibility as educators is to ensure that students succeed in our classroom and beyond. If students with mental illness find themselves represented in literature and safe spaces for discussion are provided, these students are empowered. A by-product is that all students receive the education necessary for them to fight the stereotypes and misconceptions that prevail in our society.

A participant walks away with:

Strategies for teaching literature that features mental illness; creating safe spaces for discussion; resources to assist students with mental illness

Presenter(s):

Heidi Juel is a Professor of English at Austin Community College. She teaches argumentation, composition, Magical Realism, Native North America, and a survey of American literature. She also teaches courses in ACC’s Honors Program. In 2017, she received a Digital Fellowship to develop course projects where students utilize the Google Suite tools that ACC provides.
