SDD20: Learn to Listen Better: Or Don't Expect Your Students to Listen

Hours: 1.5

Teachers are good orators but notoriously poor listeners. Whether you feel you are a satisfactory listener or need help listening, this workshop is for you. We will discuss why listening is important and commit to being a better listener. We will learn important strategies for listening to every word spoken and how to understand the student’s message. We will discuss what we shouldn’t do while listening (although many do). We’ll discuss how to clarify, summarize and respond to a student to show listening. We will have some in class practice. Then we will commit to practice starting with friends and family so that when we get to the game (the students), we will be role models for listening.

A participant walks away with:

Understanding why listening to students is so important

Deciding to be a better listener

Knowing the steps involved in listening

Knowing what teachers do to show the students they’re not listening

Knowing how to respond to students (even if you disagree)

Deciding to start practicing
