SDD20: Bringing the Teaching and Learning Academy into the Classroom

Hours: 1.5

Participants in the Teaching and Learning Academy's (TLA) Inaugural Cohort, some new to their craft and many long-serving ACC faculty, will discuss the value of the takeaways from the first two TLA courses: "Teaching to the Brain" and "Building a Community of Learners". Presenters will address how these takeaways stem from self-reflection, dialogue with other faculty, and the TLA course content. Presenters will share small, practical changes they plan to make in their courses, based on the key takeaways for building teaching and learning excellence and innovation.

Participants will be invited to share how they address the takeaways in their classroom and experience some of the assessment tools that the TLA faculty complete. Participants will be given an opportunity to reflect on the impact of their own teaching approaches - seen and unseen - on students' sense of belonging and learning.

At the end of the session, through the participation of all voices in the room, participants walk away with an idea of how the Teaching and Learning Academy can recharge and reinvent the classroom experience through intentional awareness of implicit biases, empowerment, exploration and reflection. As the TLA inspired us to become more intentional and reflective, we hope to inspire our colleagues to empower students to become experts in their own learning, creating relevance in any learning they choose to undertake. We will transcribe and share the suggestions for strategies and tools that form the tapestry of our collective experience as a beginning of a rich road map built by TLA faculty for all ACC faculty.

Presenter(s):

The Faculty leading this session include Terry Barksdale, TLA Participant and Associate Professor, Head Librarian, currently serving as TLA Support, Dr. Arlene Dettmann, TLA participant and Professor, Associate Degree Nursing; Alicia Salzmann, MFA, TLA participant and adjunct associate professor of English; Anne Fletcher, MA, TLA participant and adjunct professor of English, Integrated Reading and Writing, and Student Development; Susan Diamond, TLA Participant and Surgical Technology Professor; and Mollie Nelson, Adjunct Professor, Allied Health Sciences. All the panelists are inspired by the content they have been privileged to engage with during the Teaching and Learning Academy's inaugural year's fall courses.

To amplify and share the benefits to faculty of the content, TLA participants welcome other voices from the TLA to share content. We also invite any other ACC faculty interested in recharging and reinventing themselves while infusing their classrooms with equity, inclusive practices, and inclusive design to join our conversation about good teaching strategies - the most important of which we have learned is self-reflection. See you there! Let's write our roadmap together!
