SDD20: A Better Syllabus - Visual & Accessible

Hours: 1.5

This hands-on workshop will offer practical procedures rooted in accessibility, policy, and universal design for how to customize and personalize an engaging student-centered syllabus document using Microsoft Word. Workshop participants will use an MS Word visual and accessible template document to create their own customized visual and accessible syllabus.

Presentation attendees will be provided an example of a visual and fully accessible syllabus template, and a job aid document of procedures for personalizing the visual and accessible syllabus template. In addition, participants will be presented information on how to use key universal tools available in MS Word to measure and fix accessibility errors.

Presentation attendees should bring on a flash drive or have in their Google Drive the following files to better be able to customize the syllabus template. 1. Your current syllabus document in a format that can be cut and pasted. 2. A class banner image (180 x 720 pixels). 3. A headshot-style photo of themselves for use in the instructor photo position in the syllabus. 4. An image file of the textbook to be used in the class. 5. A selection of text for use in creating a personalized word cloud graphic. This selection can possibly come from the existing syllabus document.
